I just made my second batch of homemade toothpaste! Yes, you can make your own toothpaste (and it works). You may be wondering why...Well for lots of reasons....1) it's inexpensive 2) I know exactly the ingredients 3) it actually tastes better and is better for you 4) it's fluoride-free and 5) leaves my teeth feeling "dentist clean."
For several decades now, we have been brainwashed into thinking fluoride is necessary for our teeth. Well...upon research and reading more and more about fluoride and how it affects our health, it is not only unnecessary, but unhealthy.
Fluoride is already found in our drinking water and causes thyroid problems, lowers your IQ, and increases your risk for arthritis. New Zealand has already said "no" to fluoridated water and now prohibits its use.
Of course, I could go on and on about why you shouldn't buy conventional toothpaste, but I want to get right on to how easy and fun it is to make your own! For more information on fluoride click here.
Purchasing organic, all-natural and fluoride-free toothpaste is expensive at $6. A few months ago, I came across this amazing website, The Bulk Herb Store. They have all kinds of herbs and herbal mixes along with helpful videos and delicious recipes.
I happened upon a video on DIY toothpaste. My initial reaction was, "no way! With what?" One of the key ingredients is bentonite clay, which helps neutralize acid, removes unhealthy bacteria and infection, and promotes healthy gums. Baking soda also helps buff your teeth and whiten. The cinnamon and cloves also help promote healthy bacteria and give the toothpaste a nice flavor. If you just don't like mint toothpaste or enjoy change, this is a great recipe to try! You could also experiment with different flavors by adding in a high quality essential oil.
As you can see here, it makes plenty! This will easily last a family of four over 6 months. If you purchase the kit, you can make several batches from it. The only thing you may need extra of is the bentonite clay-depending on how thick you prefer your toothpaste.
You can view the recipe and purchase the kit here.
Happy brushing!
Stephanie
